AADMD Virtual Grand Rounds
Every THIRD Tuesday* of the month the AADMD Student & Resident Committee hosts interdisciplinary webinars for clinicians to learn from colleagues in a patient-centered manner with the purpose of encouraging comprehensive care provision to patients with IDD.

This webinar, “Environmental Adaptations to Increase Comfort for Individuals with ID/DD in the Dental Office and other Medical Care Settings”, features Heidi Keil and Meredith Wheelock, both graduate students in the BS/MS occupational therapy program at the University at Buffalo, Simone Debellis, a third year dental student at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine (UBSDM, Dr. Meelin Dian Chin Kit-Wells, a board-certified pediatric dentist, as well as Janice Tona PhD, OTR/L, an occupational therapist and educational psychologist.

This presentation will provide an overview of the many sensory and motor barriers when accessing healthcare that individuals with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities face. Using a dental office as an example, we will discuss simple adaptations to office visits that can meet the sensory needs and positioning needs of individuals with ID/DD to increase comfort of the patient and success of the visit. A collaborative model between University Pediatric Dentistry and the Occupational Therapy program at the University at Buffalo will be discussed.
